The Ten Commandment of Touring

Tour Preparation

Driving and Touring with a Small Horsepower Car: Prep, Parts, and, Tools, 2025

This is a summary paper about preparing for a short tour or around town driving. It was written for a tech session at the 2025 RROC Annual Meet and was was intended for relatively new drivers. It is not a detailed review for experienced drivers or long distance tours.

The basis of this document was an article written by Rick Brown about his travels with Thayer, his 1923 Springfield Silver Ghost. In the past 25 years, Rick traveled over 350,000 miles without a breakdown he was not able (with some help) to repair roadside. Additional information was provided by the RROC, RREC 20HP Register, RROC-Australia, Doug White of North Carolina, and Pierce Reid of Vermont, then packaged together by Rick Otis of the RROC Chesapeake Region. It was published in the 2025-08 edition of the Flier (page 3).

A suggested list to parts and tools for touring

The tools and parts you should carry depends on the nature of your trip. This is an extensive list provided by the SGA and includes much of what you might need for tour from Punta Arenas to Anchorage. It’s probably more than you would need for a short drive to your local ice cream shop. For group tours check to see if someone else in your group is carrying a tool or part so you won’t miss the very thing you decide not to bring.

How to be a Good Navigator

Ever been a passenger in a vintage car and felt a little lost? This article was presented at the 2025 RROC Annual Meet and is a guide to being a navigator. It was published in the 2024-04 edition of the Flier (page 12).
